New England Network Director

Organizational Profile and Culture

1% for the Planet (1%) exists to build and support an alliance of businesses financially committed to creating a healthy planet. Launched in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard (Patagonia, Inc.) and Craig Mathews (Blue Ribbon Flies), 1% is a rapidly growing, global network of companies that give at least 1% of their annual sales to nonprofit organizations focused on issues of sustainability. 1% is a brand-driven organization that engages people and inspires them to make better choices as consumers. Through our unique and innovative model, we are growing a movement that has significantly improved funding and support for environmental causes and the activists who champion them. Membership currently consists of just over 1400 businesses in 44 countries, together giving over $20 million annually to environmental groups worldwide, with more than $70 million given to date. Our future goals are ambitious. We seek to create high-impact partnerships with companies and nonprofits, working together to enable big, positive change to happen on the scale needed to address the many environmental challenges of our time.

Expanding Environmental Philanthropy in New England

New England's forests and mountains, freshwater streams and lakes, beaches and coastal wetlands are natural resources that have shaped the history and culture of the region, and are the foundation for its ongoing sustainability. New England is also home to a large number of socially and environmentally responsible companies, innovative environmental non-profits and community and private foundations focused on the protection and preservation of New England's natural resources and ecosystems.


1% for the Planet (1% FTP) and the Jessie B. Cox Charitable Trust share a common belief that increasing public awareness of the value of New England's natural resources, and building the capacity of citizens, non-profit organizations, community foundations and businesses to be advocates for and stewards of these resources is critical to their long term protection and preservation.


1% for the Planet, in collaboration with the Jessie B. Cox Charitable Trust, is launching a long term, strategic initiative to increase environmental philanthropy in New England through expansion of and action by 1% members located in New England and other locations throughout the world. This effort will help facilitate partnerships between 1% member companies and New England environmental non-profits that result in significant, lasting and beneficial environmental change for the region and the planet.


Job Overview

The New England Network Director owns the growth of the 1% New England network, and 1% giving to New England non-profits, and is leading the first large scale regional development effort for 1% for the Planet.


The New England Network Director is responsible for designing, resourcing and implementing strategies that increase philanthropic resources from 1% members to New England environmental organizations and support high impact 1% network partnerships that result in significant and lasting environmental benefits for the region and the planet.


The New England Network Director will collaborate with 1% staff, board members, 1% network members, Jessie B. Cox Charitable Trust staff and other key stakeholders in the design and execution of the New England regional strategy. Specific responsibilities include:


  • Developing an action agenda for New England that increases environmental philanthropy and builds long-term support for non-profits working on critical environmental issues, including large-scale habitat protection. This agenda would be reflected in a long-term vision document that could be shared with business, non-profit and community stakeholders.
  • Developing, resourcing and overseeing implementation of an annual plan of work consistent with the long-term action agenda. The work plan would include goals, strategies, resources and performance metrics to achieve outcomes that are mutually beneficial to 1% and the Jessie B. Cox Charitable Trust. Elements of the plan include but are not limited to:

  • identifying member company prospects and developing and implementing strategies for recruiting new member companies.
  • working with 1% marketing staff and partners to develop New England specific marketing and communications strategies.
  • orienting new 1% member companies and helping them develop their environmental giving strategies and finding non-profit partners, if needed.
  • qualifying New England environmental non-profits to receive funding from 1% members.
  • developing and implementing information sessions, training programs, and other communications needed to help 1% New England members and their non-profit partners deepen their relationships and strengthen their capacities to protect critical environmental resources in the region.
  • identifying and supporting high impact partnerships between 1% network members, and other organizations where appropriate, that result in significant and lasting environmental benefits to the region and/or the planet.

  • Preparing and managing an annual budget for the New England initiative and fulfilling all grant reporting requirements.
  • Developing and executing an annual communication plan, which will raise awareness of the 1%/Trust partnership and its long term vision for New England, report on its goals and progress to date and raise visibility of 1% members and Trust grantees. Communications would occur in traditional and digital media forums including general and trade press, television, radio, websites and social media platforms.

The New England Network Director reports to the VP of Organizational Development. The New England Director will direct and manage 1% staff from the Member Experience, Visibility and Communications and Development and Partnerships teams engaged in New England specific activities in 2012. The New England Network Director will hire and manage a New England Network Manager as the initiative develops over time.


The ideal candidate would have 7-10 years of experience working with socially responsible companies and/or environmental non-profits, a strong professional network with relationships in the business, non-profit and/or government sectors, and demonstrated capacity to design, build and grow strategic initiatives.

The location of this position will be determined collaboratively with the New England Network Director.
