City to Sea's award-winning Refill campaign prevents plastic pollution at source, by making it easier to reuse and refill your water bottle on the go than to buy a single-use plastic bottle.
The campaign works by connecting people who are looking for water via a location-based app. Anyone can download the app to find Refill Stations near them. Participating cafes, bars, restaurants, banks, galleries, museums and other businesses simply sign up to the app and put a sticker in their window – alerting passers-by that they’re welcome to come on in and fill up their bottle. There are now over 19,000 Refill Stations across the UK, and if they’re used just once a day we’re saving over 6 million plastic bottles a year. City to Sea will be running engaging, interactive and educational action days where participants will clean up ocean or river plastics and learn about how our daily actions in cities affect our oceans. This will be followed by a ‘Refill Recruitment’ session where participants will go out on the hunt to sign up even more places as Refill Stations. The timing is perfect too – as it will be weeks before National Refill Day on the 19th June which is one big push to encourage people to ditch single-use plastic bottles for good! Last year we reached 33 million on social media and had coverage from all major news outlets. By joining us in June, your organisation will able to join the growing momentum in the lead up to National Refill Day and leverage the extra excitement around the campaign at this time of year.
Volunteers should bring warm clothes, their reusable bottle and enthusiasm!
