The job

1% for the Planet is looking for an intern to provide support to our Business operations team, reporting to our data management subteam. The business operations team at 1% for the Planet optimizes how we do things, to best support our organization’s mission and purpose (our why). 


The intern will work closely with the data management team in two main areas: database administration and data cleanup within our two CRMs (Salesforce and Hubspot), and data analysis tasks to support implementation and use of a Business Intelligence tool across the entire organization. Within these two areas there will be opportunity to collaborate with, and gain exposure to, other teams across the organization. Examples of potential projects include: manual or automated manipulation of data fields and records to support data integrity within our CRMs; implementation support for, and/or documentation of, existing or new CRM integrations; report running and data analysis (e.g. building pivot tables) to provide insights into historic behaviors and future trends within our stakeholder network.

Key responsibilities

  • Work closely with supervisor and other business operations team members to support specific projects and tasks, which will be customized as best as possible to the intern’s interests and skill set
  • With instruction, join the effort to continually improve the data integrity of our two CRMs, specifically the clean up of certain data fields, which may require manual or automated deletions and CRM updates
  • Build out documentation of current tooling and processes
  • Perform regular maintenance of and assist in the setup of new CRM integrations
  • Ideation and further development of Mixpanel tracking and analysis for our custom stakeholder portal
  • Support data analysis needed to implement a new business intelligence software for the organization, and document data flows and manipulations once they are in place
  • Each intern will hold a seat on 1% for the Planet’s Intern Advisory Council where we work to evolve the program

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Established proficiency in Microsoft Excel and/or Google sheets and basic data manipulation skills (e.g. chart creation, pivot tables)
  • Experience with Salesforce or any relational database preferred but not required
  • Coursework in data science, database management or business administration a plus
  • Passion for the role of the nonprofit sector in driving positive environmental and social outcomes, and enthusiasm for supporting the work of the business operations team to further the mission of 1% for the Planet
  • Comfortable engaging with others virtually (Zoom and Google Hangouts), coupled with the ability to work independently and confidently ask questions or share ideas
