Over the first few months of 2019, we’ve seen 1% for the Planet members show up across the globe to share what they do best and lead the way in environmental giving.
From outdoor film screenings to member-packed trade shows and growing the movement across the world, the 1% for the Planet network kicked off the year by showing up for the planet in a big way. Here are a few of our favorite event highlights from 2019 so far:
Winter Outdoor Retailer: Small Batch Sustainability (January 29-31)
It’s no surprise that the outdoor industry brings together a strong crew of 1% for the Planet members. This year’s Winter Outdoor Retailer in Denver, CO was packed 1% for the Planet member businesses.
Touting their environmental stewardship, 1% for the Planet business members Sunski, Miir, Rumpl and Bee’s Wrap joined a panel on Small Batch Sustainability moderated by our own CEO Kate Williams and hosted by RANGE.
The panelists discussed what responsible brands can do today to push for sustainability in their products and the shift in consumption among consumers. You can watch the entire panel and learn more about Small Batch Sustainability here.
To round out a great week in Boulder, Weston Backcountry hosted a unique 1% for the Planet member happy hour - Cheers to the Forest. The event proved to be a huge success - raising nearly $2,500 for the National Forest Foundation.
Backcountry Film Festival: Celebrating collaboration (February 22)
Thet 1% for the Planet model is built on strong partnerships and our success depends on collaboration. In February, the Backcountry Film Festival truly exemplified our model in action.
The night was hosted by local 1% for the Planet members All Good, The Sandbox, Toad&co and Topa Topa Brewing. We had a blast and managed to raise money for a phenomenal cause while doing so. All proceeds from this collaboration of members benefitted local nonprofit partner Outside Now. You love to see it!
Momentum building in Australia (February 16 - 26)
We’re a global movement. We have thousands of members and nonprofit partners in over 65 countries. But we all know that in order to tackle the crises facing our environment, the planet needs more support. It has to be everyone, all together, for our planet. We’re inspired by one country that is truly stepping up to answer this call to action: Australia.
In the past year alone, the number of 1% for the Planet members in Australia doubled. We’re excited to see this kind of momentum in our movement and commitment to the planet.
In February, the 1% for the Planet team traveled to Australia to visit our growing network and host our first national event series.
First stop: Sydney! With a packed room and a line out the door, Patagonia Sydney hosted oura panel of businesses making the commitment to membership, moderated by 1% for the Planet COO Jon Cocina.
Panelists from 1% for the Planet members Australian Ethical, KeepCup, Koala and Patagonia inspired the room of environmental enthusiasts, explaining how joining 1% for the Planet is one of the simplest and most effective ways to start reversing our negative impact on the planet.
With a room filled past capacity, the panel had an incredible turn out from both business members (Patagonia, Australian Ethical, KeepCup, Koala, Platinum Cables, Spindrift Collections, boody, Koala Eco, Midnight Runners, The Sustainable Traveller and more) and their nonprofit partners (Rainforest Rescue, WWF, OzHarvest, Take 3, 1 Million Women and Greening Australia.) With this truly collaborative discussion, the energy and momentum in Australia is clear. Check out a full recap of the event in this featured article.
We continued our journey in Australia by running into Tropical Cyclone Oma but that didn’t stop us from making it to member Byron Bay’s Surf Fest, connecting with a growing hub of members in Byron like Auguste, Arnhem, Spell & the Gypsy Collective, Gamma Allergy, Wayfarers Atlas, Seabin Project, GoPal, Smart Leash and celebrating KeepCup’s new commitment in Melbourne.
