1% for the Planet provides businesses with expertise in environmental giving, credibility consumers trust and the accountability to follow through. Each year, businesses contribute 1% of their annual revenue/turnover directly to our verified impact partners.

MEMBERSHIP LEVELS
- Whole Company: Our flagship model. Commit 1% of annual revenue/turnover from business operations. Use our logo on all marketing materials and product packaging associated with your business.
- Brand: For brands or companies that are owned by a larger entity. Commit 1% of annual revenue/turnover for a specific brand(s) or all sales made in specific countries. Logo use and communication of membership is limited to the participating brand(s) or associated geographic boundaries.
- Product Line: Commit 1% of annual revenue/turnover for a specific product line, sales channel, or business unit. Use of the logo and communication assets are strictly limited to materials and packaging specifically associated with the participating products.
1% COMMITMENT
The 1% commitment is based on total business operations (representing sales, services, and/or fees) as computed under your normal methods of accounting and as used for public reporting. For many businesses, this is their gross annual revenue/turnover. Returns, discounts, pass-through costs, and/or other allowances may be excluded, so that the 1% commitment is based on your real, earned annual revenue/turnover.
ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP DUES & ACTIVATION FEE
Annual membership dues are based on expected revenue/turnover for the first fiscal year of membership and are prorated by month depending on your enrollment date. New members also pay a one-time activation fee. Both membership dues and the activation fee count toward the annual 1% commitment.
Use this chart to calculate the prorated first year membership dues + one-time activation fee.
CONTRIBUTIONS
To fulfill the rest of your commitment, you’ll contribute directly to the in-network, vetted impact partners of your choice. You can make contributions based on your projected revenue/turnover at any point during your fiscal year. The 1% commitment can be fulfilled through any combination of monetary, in-kind, or volunteer time contributions to nonprofit impact partners. Contributions to enterprise impact partners may fulfil up to one half (50%) of the annual 1% commitment. Learn more about eligible contributions types here.
CERTIFICATION
Once your fiscal year ends, you will have 120 days to submit your proof of revenue/turnover as well as proof of all in-network contributions, totaling at least 1% of revenue, in the member portal. Once submitted, our team reviews the documents and grants certification to those who have met the 1% threshold. The right to use the 1% for the Planet CERTIFIED logo is contingent upon successful certification. Learn more about compliant logo use and brand guidelines here.

COMPLIANCE
1% for the Planet is a credible certification framework available to businesses around the world. Our mission is to accelerate smart environmental giving and prevent greenwashing. Currently, one of the main drivers of anti-greenwashing regulation is the European Union. Businesses selling or operating within the EU should be aware of the Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition (ECGT) Directive, which takes effect on September 27, 2026. Businesses should consult with their own legal counsel to determine how ECGT may impact them specifically.
By joining as a 1% for the Planet Member, you drive real environmental impact—certified by 1% for the Planet and substantiated by third party auditing—and have an authentic story to share with your customers. More information on the ECGT Directive and 1% for the Planet can be found here.
LOGO USE
The 1% FOR THE PLANET CERTIFIED BUSINESS (or CERTIFIED PRODUCT, as applicable) logo is ECGT compliant, and is the only logo that should be used on packaging, marketing materials, and at point of sale within the EU.
Members can only use the 1% FOR THE PLANET CERTIFIED BUSINESS (or CERTIFIED PRODUCT, as applicable) logo once they’ve successfully certified a fiscal year.
We highly encourage all certified members to exclusively use the updated 1% for the Planet Certified logo— on products, packaging, and marketing materials—as this is the only EU-compliant logo. However, it is our understanding that members can use the primary logo on their website and social media so long as it is accompanied by written context that sufficiently explains their status in the network. For example, in referring to 1% for the Planet, the organization and global movement, or to explain their 1% for the Planet membership and what the 1% commitment entails.
CERTIFICATION
Once your fiscal year ends, you will have 120 days to certify your 1% commitment. To certify, members submit proof of revenue and proof of contribution documentation (totaling at least 1% of revenue/turnover) through their member portal. Once submitted, our team reviews the documents and then certifies that the 1% commitment was met.
Only after you have completed your first certification may you use the Certified Business/Product logo. To begin using the 1% for the Planet Certified Business/Product logo immediately, new members must certify that they have fulfilled the 1% commitment for their most recently completed fiscal year.
INDEPENDENT THIRD PARTY AUDIT REQUIREMENT
Under the new Directive, all sustainability labels must be based on a certification scheme that is monitored by an independent third party. 1% for the Planet has selected an ISO 17065 accredited auditor, and will provide a seamless auditing experience for members selling or marketing in the EU. Members will opt in to auditing when they first log in to their member portal and every fiscal year after. Members will be responsible for paying the nominal audit fee directly to the audit firm. In order to ensure ECGT compliance, this fee is not a part of the 1% commitment and maintains full auditor independence for the 1% for the Planet certification scheme. More compliance information can be found here.
