In a nutshell, 1% for the Planet’s mission is to accelerate smart environmental impact and prevent greenwashing. We’ve been doing this for nearly 25 years, so we thought it was time to give our logo a refresh (hint: there’s a fun new addition to our seal).
When Yvon Chouinard and Craig Mathews were sitting on the Madison River fishing in 2002, the two shared their gripes about questionable claims businesses were making about their environmental impacts. They had seen brands claim to be “green” or to be “giving a portion of their profits” back to the planet—without much to back it up. And as Chouinard has been known to say in regards to giving only a percentage of profits, “1% of nothing is nothing.”
That’s when our co-founders came up with the idea for 1% for the Planet: companies commit to giving back 1% of sales (not just profits) to environmental organizations annually. Today, when companies say they give back, 1% for the Planet makes sure they do.
You’ve probably spotted the 1% for the Planet logo on products in your grocery store’s aisles. Or maybe you’ve seen it adorning the websites of your favorite brands. Next time you spot the 1% for the Planet logo, you’ll know that it means your money can make a positive impact—whether you’re shopping for skincare, a mattress or even a new accountant.
Unlike other certifications, our logo uniquely highlights point-of-sale impact, clearly communicating to customers how their purchase contributes to a healthier planet.
The 1% for the Planet logo shows what we stand for: commitment, credibility and accelerating environmental impact. When you see it, you know it's a real commitment that people everywhere understand and value.
While our primary logo has stayed the same, we made some small but impactful tweaks to our certified member and certified product logos. Why did we do this? Simply put, as a credible certification framework, 1% for the Planet is committed to providing our members with resources to support global compliance.
In September 2026, the Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition (ECGT) Directive went into effect, seeking to eliminate greenwashing in the EU. For certification schemes like ours, this meant adding information and transparency to our logos (like including 1ftp.org and clearly identifying the verified certification). For our business members, this meant adopting these new logos to clearly showcase their certification responsibilities so EU customers can do their due diligence before purchasing.

Before completing its first certification, members may use our primary brand logos on their website and social media to communicate affiliation and commitment. You’ll see it accompanied by an explanation of the brand’s certification status.

A 1% for the Planet Certified Business commits 1% of annual revenue to vetted and approved impact partners. This is the logo business members can use after their first year of certification.

A 1% for the Planet Certified Product commits 1% of annual revenue of a product line to vetted impact partners. You’ll see this logo on packaging and marketing materials specifically associated with participating products.
