The Pyrenees mountains are where it all started for Kilian Jornet.
Growing up in Catalonia, Spain’s vast landscape kickstarted his appreciation for the outdoors and the greater planet. Now a seasoned athlete covering record-breaking grounds in the running, skiing and mountaineering worlds, Jornet is baking climate action into his hobbies and his career—working with NNormal and Kilian Jornet Foundation to protect global mountain ranges.
He’s driven by the belief that, as the climate crisis accelerates, climate action is no longer a choice. It’s a necessity. As the co-founder of 1% for the Planet Member NNormal, Jornet built the brand on the belief that long-lasting gear can inspire people to enjoy and respect nature. Since the start, its team acknowledges that creating a transparent and environmentally responsible brand takes time and effort. As part of its duty to use business as a force for good, Jornet ensured NNormal joined the 1% for the Planet movement early on in its inception.
"Individual action matters, but it's when we come together as a community that real change becomes possible,” Jornet says.
Through its 1% for the Planet commitment, NNormal supports Kilian Jornet Foundation, a 1% for the Planet Environmental Partner dedicated to preserving mountains through research, education and action. NNormal’s status as a rising outdoor gear company in Europe has helped the environmental organization make strides, using climate action as a way to protect the places people recreate.
“Through 1% for the Planet, the partnership between NNormal and the Kilian Jornet Foundation has become more than just shared values—it's a concrete way to turn commitment into impact,” Jornet adds. “This collaboration between business and nonprofit shows how we can join forces to protect the places we love."
Since their partnership began, NNormal has supported the Kilian Jornet Foundation toward two key initiatives: Restore the Trails and Running Minds.
Engaging the outdoor community with Running Minds
In 2024, the Kilian Jornet Foundation, in partnership with NNormal and fellow 1% for the Planet Member UpClear, launched Running Minds. The global initiative is designed to connect runners with their surroundings—combining community with climate action. Building on the success of their first event in Chamonix last August, the teams expanded Running Minds globally on International Mountain Day. The simultaneous events held in December created more opportunities for athletes and environmental experts to unite for community runs and meaningful discussions about local sustainability challenges and opportunities. In just eight gatherings across five different countries, more than 350 people participated last year.
Climate action with Restore the Trails
There’s a lot more to restoring trails than just clearing paths and removing debris. The second initiative NNormal supports through its partnership with Kilian Jornet Foundation is Restore the Trails. Dedicated to protecting flora and fauna, improving accessibility and reducing erosion, the project’s initiatives help safeguard the historical significance of impactful routes while preserving degraded mountain trails around the world. With the donations certified by 1% for the Planet, NNormal and Kilian Jornet Foundation have connected over 60 volunteers across four trail projects to protect the natural areas in Spain and California.
