Tombolo is deeply committed to protecting New York City and its surrounding environment—especially New York Harbor. Their 1% for the Planet environmental partnership with Billion Oyster Project is revitalizing the harbor’s marine ecology and local oyster reefs.

Before populations were depleted due to overharvesting and ocean dumping, the harbor once held 220,000 oyster reefs and supported species like flounder, dolphins and blue crabs. Local indigenous peoples, like the Lenape, counted on oyster ecosystems for food and nourishment.

Oysters slowly began returning in the early 2000s thanks to regulations like the Clean Water Act—but there is still work to be done.

As a New York-based company, Tombolo wanted to support efforts giving back to the environmental health of New York City. They met with Billion Oyster Project on Governors Island to learn more about reef restoration work and the importance of urban environmental efforts. To support the cause, they created a clothing collection that drives 100% of proceeds back—amounting to over $75,000. The brand is sustaining their support and now setting 15% of capsule proceeds aside to continue aiding oyster reef restoration.

“We believe in supporting organizations that share our vision and purpose, and organizations that are dedicated to making a positive impact on our environment and the communities we call home.”

Tombolo’s environmental giving is directly improving New York City’s water quality and oyster restoration efforts. Through 1% for the Planet partnership, the clothing brand is boosting Billion Oyster Project’s mission of restoring 1 billion oysters in the New York Harbor by 2035.
