We're approaching September 30th—in Canada, it's the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This holiday is part of an ongoing process of acknowledging the historic and current injustices committed against Aboriginal Canadians, particularly through the residential school system. 

From 1867 to 1996, the Government of Canada reports there were 140 federally run residential schools in the country. These schools—among others unofficially reported outside that timeframe, according to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation—forcibly assimilated First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, stripping them of their traditions, languages and cultural practices.

Real reconciliation can't just be a date on the calendar. It’s a lifelong commitment. That’s why we're highlighting the work 1% for the Planet Member Faulhaber is doing with impact partners like RAVEN, an organization that works to support Indigenous Nations by upholding their rights in court.

Through 1% for the Planet membership, Faulhaber has supported RAVEN, alongside other Canadian organizations that work with Indigenous communities across the country. We talked with Tara Anderson, Account Director at Faulhaber, about Truth & Reconciliation Day and what it means to the Faulhaber team.

Why is Truth & Reconciliation Day important to Faulhaber? 

At Faulhaber, we are committed to supporting Canadian organizations that are driving meaningful environmental and social change. Since 2022, our team has donated over $20,000 CAD to Canadian organizations that work in partnership with Indigenous communities across the country to create resilient, sustainable local economies.   

We recognize that reconciliation is a continuous journey, and we are committed to learning, listening and supporting organizations that are advancing Indigenous rights and creating positive change. 

What does your partnership with RAVEN look like? What programs have you been part of, supported or been inspired by?  

We have made monetary contributions to RAVEN every year since learning about their organization and their work through the 1% for the Planet in 2023. 

RAVEN (Respecting Aboriginal Values and Environmental Needs) is an organization dedicated to upholding Indigenous rights through powerful, Indigenous-led legal action. RAVEN partners with First Nations to pursue justice through the courts, advancing landmark cases that protect Indigenous lands, cultures and sovereignty. These legal efforts are setting important precedents, helping to reshape Canadian law and return stewardship to First Peoples.
