Fadeaway Sessions are Bridging the Gap of Music and Conservation Across the American West

Drive down California’s Highway 1 and through the abundant Monterey Cypress, and you’ll find yourself at La Playa Hotel in Carmel-by-the-Sea. As owner and operator of the historic hotel, 1% for the Planet Member Marc & Rose Hospitality added the centennial gem to its collection of resorts across the American West over a decade ago. Just last year, spurred by Marc & Rose Hospitality’s new partnership with Northern California-based music presenter (((folkYEAH!))), La Playa Hotel was added as a new venue for Fadeaway Sessions—a series of live music performances that benefit 1% for the Planet Environmental Partners.

The success of Fadeaway Sessions at its original spot, the High Country Motor Lodge in Arizona, has followed Marc & Rose Hospitality to the coastal side of the west. Passersby can find musicians like Ty Segall and Lia Ices setting up shop in the hotel’s bar and restaurant, Bud’s. While Carmel hums with music at La Playa Hotel, it continues to flow along Route 66 at the High Country Motor Lodge.
These small concerts aren’t just benefiting the local arts scene. They’re also benefiting the planet. Each Fadeaway Session donates $1,000 to 1% for the Planet Environmental Partners, aiming to cultivate community and conservation through music. Whether in Arizona or California, Marc & Rose Hospitality prioritizes supporting local organizations to help conserve the landscapes that host their music events.
“It was inspired by our 1% for the Planet membership,” notes Emily Dille, Marc & Rose Hospitality’s VP of Marketing & Brand Management. “We continued to expand. That’s what’s so cool. That this funky idea and fun little thing we’ve been doing in Flagstaff, then gave us a little bit of street cred. Each place takes on a life of its own while still having the same premise.”

The creativity Marc & Rose Hospitality brings to its membership is inspirational for members and businesses alike. With over 65 industries represented in the 1% for the Planet movement, Marc & Rose Hospitality is helping define what environmental action looks like for the hospitality industry. Dille remarked that, “It’s not just something to check a box or throw a logo on your collateral. There’s so much more there.”
John Grossman, Marc & Rose Hospitality’s owner, highlights growing up on mountain tops and rivers—and how that has inspired the business’s commitment to preserving the surrounding nature and communities in which they operate. Since the inception of Fadeaway Sessions, the team has given $30,000 in proceeds from events at High Motor Lodge Inn to Glen Canyon Institute, an environmental partner dedicated to the Colorado River’s restoration. Its team is now working with 1% for the Planet to decide the recipient of event proceeds at La Playa Hotel, prioritizing organizations advancing the Rights to Nature and Conservation & Restoration impact areas.
Dille’s advice to businesses looking to join 1% for the Planet? “Absolutely join. Not just join, but get involved.” As a member for nearly a decade, Marc & Rose Hospitality knows that the value of membership grows when you lean in, build relationships and engage beyond the logo.
