People for the Planet Award Pinnacle Award: Avocado Green Mattress

Founded in 2017, Avocado Green Mattress has always put people and the planet first. The company continues to raise the bar for environmental responsibility as they go above and beyond their 1% for the Planet commitment, supporting 29 nonprofits in all six of our key issue areas. To honor these amazing achievements, we’re excited to announce Avocado Green Mattress as our first recipient of the 1% for the Planet Pinnacle Award.

Being a 1% member is as essential to who we are as the products we handcraft. We believe in accountability in business, and that even small actions can add up to huge change. We’re humbled and honored to win this award and to be able to partner with non-profits all across the world making incredible strides forwards for our people and planet.

To honor Avocado Green Mattress' achievements in environmental philanthropy, we want to highlight the ways they support each of our six key issue areas:

Climate

Avocado Green Mattresses are certified organic by the Global Organic Textile Standard and made from organic wool, cotton, and latex. Each product is produced in Los Angeles at a facility with rigorous environmental laws and labor standards. The company ensures that all materials going into their mattresses are as safe and sustainable as they can be—but their commitment doesn't stop there. Avocado Green Mattress became Climate Neutral certified in 2017 to offset the impact of production, making them the first mattress company to be certified. This means that they are cutting down emissions where they can, and offsetting the rest.

In addition to being carbon neutral, they are GREENGUARD  Gold certified, meeting the most rigorous emission standards for chemical exposure and pollutants. Climate standards impact everyone and everything on Earth. The positive impact that Avocado Green Mattress commits to shows up in all six of our issue areas: climate, food, land, pollution, water and wildlife.

Honoring

Food

Avocado Green Mattress partners with nonprofits like the Kula Project  that support farmers and create a more sustainable future for people and the planet. The Kula Project works alongside coffee farmers in Rwanda to help start small businesses, support sustainable farming initiatives and maintain business in the long term.

The company works with  City Harvest,  a nonprofit partner that aims to end hunger in New York city. Their work includes food rescue, distribution, education and creating innovative solutions to food security. Additionally, Avocado Green Mattress supports the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation, a nonprofit with the goal of alleviating hunger by planting fruitful trees in areas where they are needed most.

Pollution

Avocado Green Mattresses are completely biodegradable and recyclable, meaning they won’t stick around to pollute the planet. Made with organic materials, the mattresses break down over time. The steel innersprings are also recyclable, keeping the entire product out of landfills. Avocado Green Mattress co-owns certified organic rubber plantations in India that are Forest Stewardship Council certified. This ensures deforestation-free, environmentally-conscious and socially responsible rubber in making the final product. The Green Mattress is certified nontoxic by their nonprofit partner, MADE SAFE, meaning that absolutely no harmful substances are used in making the product. The brand is one of just three mattress brands in the world to earn this certification. The company also partners with PLAN: The Post-Landfill Action Network, a nonprofit started by students to reduce campus waste.

Land

Since Avocado Green mattress works closely with and even co-owns some of the farms growing mattress materials, they can ensure sustainable sourcing.

However, they take their commitment to land conservation even further through their 1% for the Planet partnerships. In 2017, the company partnered with the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy to repair trails damaged by the 2017 Thomas Fire. They currently partner with Forterra, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting land and taking on projects that use land for the good of people and the planet. In addition to their own efforts in reducing deforestation, Avocado Green Mattress also supportsFriends of Trees and National Forest Foundation to protect our forests.

Sheep

Wildlife

Avocado Green Mattress takes full responsibility for the materials used in production and animal products are no exception. In addition to being 100% organic, the wool used in the mattresses comes from a co-owned collective in India. This allows the company to ensure certified organic feed and pastures, humane treatment and animal healthcare.

Wool was a strategic and eco-conscious choice for the company. It's  a natural material and completely renewable and regenerative—not to mention breathable, odor resistant and has thermoregulation properties to keep you comfortable through the seasons. Wool is naturally flame-resistant, making it possible to stay away from harmful chemicals and stick with the basics. The Vegan Action certified mattress is made using organic cotton fiber instead of wool. To top it all off, Avocado Green Mattress partners with several nonprofit partners that support wildlife, including the National Parks Conservation Association, and the Alaska Wilderness League.

Through sustainable agriculture and pollution regulation efforts, Avocado Green Mattress also protects water. The company also partners with Heal the Bay, a nonprofit empowering people to keep the Los Angeles coasts clean, restore waterways and advocate for clean water in their communities.
