Global Summit 2019 recap
Our Global Summit is a meeting of the minds, an international gathering of leaders in the environmental movement, a sharing of ideas to empower each other forward—and above all—a hope spot. Our third annual Global Summit in Portland, Oregon was no different. With a sold-out crowd, the momentum was palpable.
We came together to recognize the achievements of our network from the past year. In 2018, 1% for the Planet partnerships generated more than $25 million toward environmental giving. In just one year, over 600 new businesses and individuals joined 1% for the Planet—a number which comprises over 280 new international members. With our mission resonating around the globe, 2018 marked the largest growth in organizational history.
However, the intention of our Global Summit is to not only celebrate our past successes, but to learn from one another, inspire one another and propel our movement forward to save the planet. With this in mind, the theme of Global Summit 2019 was Movement Building.
Every day, there is a greater necessity to create a positive impact on the environment. While we’re proud of our record-setting year, our work is not done. Yes, the Summit provides an opportunity to celebrate all that we’ve accomplished as a network but it’s not about looking in the rear view mirror; it’s about feeling galvanized both by the mastery we’ve gained through those accomplishments but also by the extent to which our planet still needs our very best collective action.
We didn’t gather in Portland to just talk about why we’re all here. We know our environment is in crisis. We know that this is a critical moment for our planet. We know the why well—too well, in fact. 1% for the Planet members traveled from cities and countries near and far to challenge each other with a far more important question: how?
How are we going to take this movement to the next level? How are we going to solve our environment’s most pressing issues? How are we going to save our home planet?
Our schedule was packed, but these conversations sparked ambitious ideas and catalyzed new collaborations between like-minded businesses and individuals.
The Summit kicked off with an unforgettable welcome from Caroline Duell, Founder and CEO of All Good, and continued with an intimate conversation between our very own CEO, Kate Williams and Yvon Chouinard, Founder of Patagonia and Co-founder of 1% for the Planet.
As the Summit continued, Marc Randolph, Founder of Netflix and 1% for the Planet Board Member, encouraged innovation and explained how business can be used as a tool of disruption for the common good. Leaders from 1% for the Planet member organizations filled panels and breakout sessions on topics ranging from leading the environmental movement, accelerating our growth through activism, leveraging storytelling as a means for change, and expanding the diverse spectrum of our network.
If you weren’t able to make it to this year’s Global Summit—don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.
